Things To Do
WHALE & DOLPHIN WATCHING
The ever smiling, mischievous dolphins will put on a show while some of the oldest and the largest sea creatures, the humpback and the blue whales, will nonchalantly glide past you, when you embark on a whale/ dolphin watching excursion off the Southern, Eastern or the West coast of Sri Lanka. The ideal locations for whale watching would be Dondra Point (accessible from Galle, Hikkaduwa and Mirissa) and Trincomalee while the sea off Kalpitiya teems with an abundance of dolphins.
LEOPARD
The Sri Lanka leopard is one of the eight known subspecies of leopard. Its coat is tawny or rusty yellow, stamped with dark spots and rosettes. It is known as probably the largest of all subspecies of leopards.Seven females that were weighed averaged 29 kg; males averaged 56 kg, with the largest being 77 kg.
BIRD WATCHING
The amazing abundance of over 400 varieties of birds in Sri Lanka is attributable to the tropical climate and wide range of natural habitats, from mountains to lowlands to dry plains and lush forests. On a point of academic argument, there are either 26 or 23 endemic species in Sri Lanka, largely confined to the rainforests of the hill zone.
CAMPING
The experience of sleeping under the stars surrounded by nature in one of the island.s national parks is second to none. Campsites are sited in the most beautiful locations off the tourist trail. Camping is available in most national parks and nature reserves – from participatory camping where guests work with the staff to run the campsite, to standard and super-luxury (camping under canvas) where the experience is similar to that of a five-star hotel.
DIVING & SNORKELING
The ocean around Sri Lanka whispers of tales bygone, ones of regal maritime visits, of bandits and pirates and journeys of explorers and spice merchants. As you plunge into the warm waters and dive below, these stories come to life. The crystal clear waters of the Indian Ocean with a visibility of 20 meters (65ft) provide perfect conditions for diving.
CYCLING & MOUNTAIN BIKING
Traveling by bike, you get to see the best of the country with a level of intimacy unmatched by most other modes of travel. If you prefer to get about on two wheels but aren’t so keen on struggling with uphill climbs, there are many interesting trails in the lowlands that take you through a beautiful landscape of tea, rubber and spice plantations.
With 103 rivers and a wealth of lagoons, reservoirs, swamps and ancient canals, opportunities to explore the island’s aquatic treasures by canoe and kayak are endless. Such trips also afford interaction with nature as spectacular scenery filled with wildlife dominates the horizon. Furthermore, you can gain a privileged insight into rural Sri Lankan life by observing villagers going about their daily activities.
